Hello, Seattle!
This summer, I had the chance to spend a week at Seattle. Without any expectations of the city, I flew there to visit my sister. Turns out, I enjoyed this unplanned trip - a trip without any itinerary (very unusual of me). That week relieved my burdens, making me remember how to make a home out of anywhere.
Famous for being the city of 'firsts' - the first Starbucks coffee, origin of Microsoft, start of Amazon, home to Boeing planes, or even perhaps, soon becoming the next Silicon Valley? The city offers a lot to explore, the nature surrounding it has even more to explore. During my trip, I visited various places; Seattle's landmark and museums. Thus I managed to go on several day trips from Seattle to Portland, Rattlesnake Ridge and Bainbridge island.
Seattle
The most famous places to visit in Seattle would be the Space Needle. They also offer various combo tickets to enter - my sister and I decided to add Chihuly Garden and Glass for a $44 ticket. The Space Needle lets you see the city from the top, I do not recommend you to go if the weather is bad though. The Chihuly Garden and Glass has beautiful glass art collection to see.
If you would like to take a stroll around the city, you can explore the downtown. You can start from the Waterfront. This is where people take ferries to other island, the sea view is enjoyable with Seattle's great wheel. If you're a fan of the aquarium you can drop by at the Seattle Aquarium as well.
Just a block away, the Pike Place market is there for you to see the gum wall, the first Starbucks coffee shop, enjoy a salmon bread from Piroshky. A nice Italian restaurant to try is the pink door restaurant - it has no name, just a pink door to enter which explains the name. The space needle is not far from the Pike Place market as well if you would like to take another walk to that area.
Free First Thursday museums. In Seattle, various museums offers a free entrance every first Thurday of the month (list). In my case, I decided to visit the Seattle Art Museum and the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) with a friend from coachsurfing since my sister had classes that day.
The Seattle Art Museum is easily accessible since it is located downtown. It has a wide range of art collection, from classic paintings to contemporary exhibitions.
A few blocks away from the Seattle's space needle, you can find MOHAI - Museum of History and Industry. As people say, 'do not judge a book by its cover'. The museum seemed just like any other museum, but I must say I was surprised with its unique exhibitions. It emphasized innovation as part of the industry growth. There were various interactive exhibitions, which reminded me of the Science center in Warsaw, Poland.
Day trips
Rattlesnake Ridge - one hour away from Seattle, perfect for a short hiking (2 miles to the top).
At Bainbridge Island, there are various activities that you can enjoy. From strolling around the city, rent a bike, sightseeing at the dock, to kayaking! My sister and I decided to rent a kayak and explore the island - if you are lucky, you may see seals as well (we saw a seal swimming briefly when we were kayaking).
While you're there, I reccomend you to try Mora's ice cream! Their signature flavor is blueberry (right) and is very delicious.
